Implementation

Implementation of successful teamwork invariably requires a change in organizational culture. That change begins in the classroom with staff education and continues with the practice of consistent teamwork behaviors in the unit or department.

MedTeams’ train-the-trainer approach develops key personnel to educate other staff and, just as important, to reinforce the transfer of knowledge by coaching staff in the practice of teamwork behaviors.

The three-day MedTeams training focuses on teaching behaviors that are applicable to the healthcare workplace and anchored in real-world problems. Candidates for training are typically key physician or nursing staff members who are respected by their peers and are committed to teamwork. DRC master trainers (nurses and physicians) with significant experience in teamwork training conduct the course.

MedTeams Training includes the following:

MedTeams Team Coordination Course (TCC) - The TCC is the basic training program that the hospital instructors will provide to their staff.

TCC Instructor Certification Course - This course creates a deeper understanding of the origins of MedTeams and the principles that support this teamwork intervention. The course prepares participants to be true subject matter experts as Certified Instructors.

Web-based delivery, an optional method for providing the principles of the Team Coordination Course, is available in 2007. This option includes support materials for more effective facilitation of the introduction and implementation of MedTeams concepts and behaviors to course participants that may require a more flexible approach than structured classroom time.

Performance Evaluation Course  - Participants are introduced to the measures that evaluate the teamwork effectiveness and the impact on patient and staff satisfaction.

Culture Change Workshop - Workshop participants examine their organization’s readiness for change and identify areas of potential resistance by reviewing the steps to Kotter’s (1995) change management.

Implementation Workshop - This workshop involves establishment of an operational plan to include a specific timeline with detailed action steps and change objectives.
